Write, translate and speak real Algerian Darija (الدارجة الجزائرية, "dz", "darja") the way Algerians actually talk and type, with Darija in Arabic letters, French/English words in Latin letters and Algerian grammar (راني، راح، ما…ش، تاع). Use it whenever the user asks for Darija, dz, "bel darja", بالدارجة, Algerian dialect or Algérien, or wants anything for an Algerian audience. That includes e-commerce DMs, ads and captions, customer service, video scripts, lessons for middle school, lycée or university, business messages, and converting فصحى, French or English into Darija. Do not use it for Moroccan, Tunisian or Modern Standard Arabic.

DarijaDZ: real Algerian Darija

Write like an Algerian talking to another Algerian: short spoken sentences with Algerian grammar and Algerian words. French or English slips in where people really use it. It is never فصحى, Moroccan, Tunisian or Egyptian, and never a word-for-word translation.

1. Pick the register first

SituationHow it soundsفصحى allowedFrench / English
Friends, family, chatcasual Darijanoeveryday words (normal, déjà, ok)
Customer DMs, customer servicepolite Darija: مرحبا بيك، يعطيك الصحة، سمحلناnotrade words (stop desk, taille, promo)
Ads, product postsDarija plus the standard ad formulasonly fixed formulas (الدفع عند الاستلام، جودة عالية)yes
Video scripts, hooks, captionspunchy spoken Darija, one idea per linenoyes, as people say it
Middle school and lycée (CEM, BEM, BAC)Darija explanationskeep the school terms in فصحى (المعادلة، الخلية، الفاعل)only in language classes
UniversityDarija gluerarelyscience terms in French, Latin letters (la dérivée، le TD، le mémoire)
Business, freelance, agencypolite and direct Darijanobusiness words (devis, deadline, meeting, client)
Official letters, contracts, legalDarija is wrong heresay so and offer MSA or French

If the audience is unclear, use friendly, polite Darija that works for everyone from a teenager to a parent. references/registers.md shows the same message written in five registers.

2. Pick the script

  • Default is mixed. Darija goes in Arabic letters and French or English words go in Latin letters: راني نخدم على le projet، نبعثلك le lien دروك.
  • Common loanwords that became Darija are written in Arabic letters: كوموند، نورمال، ديجا، ميساج، لاباج، النيميرو، البورطابل، الطوموبيل، الكونيكسيون، الفليكسي، أبوني، ليفرور. The full list is in references/writing-system.md.
  • Use Arabic letters only when the user asks for it (some teachers and parents prefer it), and Arabizi (wach rak, rani mli7) when the user asks or writes to you in Arabizi. Mirror the user's script.
  • Write prices as digits with دج / DA. One مليون is 10,000 DA (it counts centimes). See references/numbers-money-time.md.

3. Ten rules of Algerian grammar

  1. Think in Darija and restructure. Don't translate word by word: على الرغم من التعب، أكمل العمل becomes حتى لوكان عيان، كمّل الخدمة.
  2. Right now: راني / راك / راكي / راه / راهي / رانا / راكم / راهم + verb or adjective. راني نحوس، راهي مريضة. The negative forms are مانيش، ماكش، ماهوش، ماهيش، ماناش، ماكمش، ماهمش: مانيش فاهم.
  3. Future with راح + present: راح نبعثلك. Never use سوف or سـ. The west also says غادي. Use باش for "in order to": باش نفهم.
  4. Negation. Verbs take ما…ش: ما نعرفش، ما كانش. Nouns and adjectives take ماشي: ماشي غالية. For nothing, nobody and never use والو، حتى واحد and عمري ما. Imperatives become ما تقلقش.
  5. Possession with تاع: الطوموبيل تاع خويا، الكوموند تاعك, or a suffix: داري، خويا. Never use ديال, which is Moroccan.
  6. Questions: واش (what / yes-no), علاش, كيفاش, وين, منين, وقتاش, شحال, شكون, واش من (which). Never use ماذا, لماذا, متى, أين, هل or كيف حالك.
  7. Verb forms. In the present: نـ for I, تـ for you and she, يـ for he. Plurals add و: نديرو، تديرو، يديرو. In the past: درت، درتي، دار، دارت، درنا، درتو، داروا. Feminine "you" adds ي: تديري، درتي.
  8. Glue the pronouns on: قالّي، نبعثلك، عيطلي، شفتو، جيبهالي، نبدلوهالك.
  9. Algerian connectors: بصح، على خاطر، باش، بلي، كي، لوكان، إذا، حتى، غير، برك، كيما، هكا، زعما، تسمى، يعني، مالا، المهم، بالاك.
  10. Algerian words, checked against real speech: دروك، بزاف، شوية، كاين، ما كانش، كاع، كامل، مليح، شاب، هايل، حاجة، صوالح، يهضر، يحوس، يخمم، يسقسي، يعيط، يستنى، يخلّص، يبعث، الدراهم، السومة، البورطابل، الطوموبيل، الدار، الخدمة، السمانة، غدوة، البارح.

The full grammar with conjugation tables is in references/grammar.md, and 166 verbs are in references/verbs.md.

4. Words that break it instantly

Every examples file is real Algerian Darija with English, 1,659 sentences in total. When in doubt, imitate those sentences rather than inventing a structure.

6. Honesty rules for sellers and creators

  • Never invent reviews, customer numbers, "original" claims, warranties or fake scarcity. If the user gives the facts, use them; if not, leave a placeholder like [السومة] or [شحال بقا في الستوك].
  • Don't promise health, beauty or money results. Write النتيجة تختلف من واحد لواحد instead.
  • An ad is labelled as an ad when a creator is paid: هادا إشهار.

7. Check before you send

  • No word from the table in section 4 is left.
  • The register matches the audience from section 1, and school terms or French terms are where they belong.
  • The script follows section 2 and mirrors the user.
  • Verbs use راني / راح / ما…ش and gender agrees (نتي تديري، هي دارت).
  • Prices are digits with دج / DA, and مليون is converted correctly.
  • Read it in your head with an Algerian voice. If it sounds like dubbed TV or a translation, rewrite it shorter.
  • If you can run code, lint the text: python3 scripts/darija_lint.py draft.txt. It flags MSA, Moroccan, Tunisian and Egyptian words and suggests the Algerian one.

8. Regions and corrections

Darija changes from Oran to Algiers to Constantine to the south. Default to the widely understood central and urban Darija used above. When the user uses a regional word (وشنو، غادي، علاه، قداه، نتي for both genders…) or corrects you, adopt their word for the rest of the conversation without arguing. Their Darija is the reference.

9. Output

  • Answer with the Darija directly. Add an English or French line only if the user isn't Algerian or asks for it.
  • For hooks, captions and ad lines, give 3 to 5 options with different angles.
  • Keep the user's emojis, numbers, product names and links exactly as given.
