course-designer

Reverse-design course objectives, content sequence, learning activities, and assessments based on the competencies students need to achieve, producing instructional plans tailored to learner profiles, class hours, and available resources. Applicable to whole courses, teaching units, or single lesson design and improvement of existing plans.

What is course-designer?

The course-designer skill shifts the focus from 'what to teach' to 'what students will be able to do, how they will learn it, and how to identify what they haven't yet mastered.' It enables educators and instructional designers to create coherent, classroom-ready plans by aligning learning objectives, activities, and assessments. The skill supports designing at any granularity—from full courses to individual lessons—and helps adapt content sequencing based on prerequisites, learner difficulties, and practice opportunities. It works across various platforms (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) and is particularly useful for improving existing plans, accommodating real classroom constraints such as class size, available hours, and resources, and providing alternate activity suggestions when needed.

What does course-designer do?

Transform "what to prepare to teach" into "what students will learn, through which activities, and how to discover what hasn't been learned yet," making instructional plans truly usable in the classroom.

Core Capabilities

  • Alignment of Objectives, Activities, and Assessments: Use expected learning performances to backward-design content, reducing disconnects between teaching and evaluation.
  • Design Rational Learning Paths: Identify prerequisite dependencies, difficult points, and practice opportunities to adjust content sequence and depth.
  • Adapt to Real Teaching Conditions: Design implementable activities and alternatives based on learner profiles, class size, lesson hours, and available resources.

Getting Started

Clarify the target learners, their current baseline, desired competencies, available class hours, textbooks, and resources. Differentiate between whole courses, units, and single lessons, and choose the design granularity as needed. For existing plans, first check major issues; if information is incomplete, you can form a first draft after stating your assumptions.

Workflow

  1. Determine learner profiles, competency goals, course granularity, and real-world constraints.
  2. First design evidence that demonstrates achievement of goals, then plan content and activities.
  3. Organize the progression based on knowledge dependencies and provide feedback or adjustments for misconceptions.
  4. Finalize a plan that fits class hours and resource conditions; check the alignment of objectives, activities, and assessments.

Use Resources as Needed

  • For method selection, boundary decisions, or complex situations: read references/methods.md.
  • When you need to organize deliverable content quickly, copy and adapt assets/course-blueprint.md; this is an optional starting point, not a fixed output format.

Deliverables

For a whole course: focus on content progression, objective coverage, and assessment arrangement. For a unit: highlight concept development and continuous tasks. For a single lesson: present directly implementable activities and feedback. Use the user's familiar lesson plan or outline format; adjust detail level as needed, without mandating chapter, lesson count, or minute-by-minute templates.
