Video Design System Consultant

A complete consultative workflow from video requirement clarification to a video design system document (DESIGN.md). Use this skill whenever a user discusses visual direction, subtitle style, color palette, typography, pacing, transitions, motion effects, aspect ratio, video design, DESIGN.md, video proposals, or redesign direction—even without explicitly mentioning 'design system'. Outputs a seven-part video design system + Video Design Tokens + SAFE/RISK proposals + keyframe previews. The goal is to finalize the video design direction, not to produce the final video (that's for remotion-build).

What is Video Design System Consultant?

This skill, named 'Video Design System Consultant', provides a structured consultative workflow for turning vague video requirements into a concrete, executable video design system. It is designed for AI agents like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex to interact with users who need to create or modify videos. The skill's core purpose is to guide the user through a multi-phase process: clarifying the video's purpose and constraints (Phase 1), researching visual and motion references (Phase 2), proposing multiple SAFE and RISK design directions (Phase 3), and finally authoring a comprehensive DESIGN.md document with a video design system (Phase 4). The DESIGN.md includes a seven-part system covering aesthetics, typography, color, timing, composition, transitions, and Video Design Tokens (a TypeScript contract). It also includes a phase for generating keyframe previews and a style proof for user approval. Crucially, the skill enforces several 'red lines' to prevent generic, cloned, or fabricated designs, ensuring originality and accessibility (e.g., minimum contrast ratios). The final output is a design specification ready for a separate build skill (remotion-build) to execute, with a clear PASS/FAIL status and next owner.

remotion-consult — Video Requirements → Video Design System

Transform "how should this video be made" from inspiration into executable engineering specifications. Through clarification, research, and proposal, the final output is a DESIGN.md (video design system document, including a tokens.ts contract) that remotion-build can directly apply.

Entry Classification (When someone says "make a video," determine the process first, don't just start asking)

When a user says "make a video/create a piece" without specifying the category, first take one question to determine which process it belongs to (consult/build/video-shotcraft all can be triggered by "make a video" — you must explicitly route them):

User IntentWhich Path
Make/modify any video (voiceover, data, product demo, brand motion, explainer, image carousel)Unified flow (consult → build); motion effects are chosen from the master motion library + shotcraft shot cards
Explicitly named video-shotcraft template (Ink Press) / free-form creation / co-creationTrigger video-shotcraft per its own process (user explicitly selects, not auto-routed)
Already has DESIGN.md / reference video / clear redesignThis process, start from Phase 0 pre-check

Classification question: "Did they explicitly request a video-shotcraft template/free form/co-creation? No → unified consult→build, borrow shot cards from shotcraft as a motion library (no mandatory selection per sentence)."

When to Use

  • Making or modifying a video (voiceover, data visualization, product demo, brand motion).
  • Defining video design direction: aspect ratio, subtitle style, color palette, typography, pacing, transitions, motion effects.
  • Needing a "video design system," "video design tokens," or "DESIGN.md."
  • Requirements are vague ("help me make a video"), requiring clarification before execution.

Core Mindset

  1. Direction before details: Determine aesthetic/subtitle/rhythm systems first, then talk about visual implementation.
  2. No templates: The goal is to produce "this video's unique rhythmic fingerprint," not to pick a template from a library.
  3. Executable first: DESIGN.md must be specific enough to write tokens.ts and scene blueprints directly; it cannot stop at "a bit more elevated."
  4. Honest: Do not fabricate data/facts in subtitle copy.

Process (Execute in Order)

Phase 0 — Pre-check

  • Check if 工作台/视频/{slug}/ already has a DESIGN.md / voiceover script / captions.srt; if so, use as baseline, don't tear down.
  • Check cross-domain design assets for the same brand (user's "web first, then video" workflow): 工作台/设计测试/{品牌}/DESIGN.md (web version) or 资料库/AI工具/设计系统库/{品牌}-DESIGN.md → if they exist, their color palette/typography/emotion are brand DNA baselines, which the video version inherits and evolves without rebuilding (also an input for Phase 3 design system consistency check).
  • Check brand constraints (project README, existing visual assets, reference videos).

Phase 1 — Clarification (Mandatory, Don't Skip)

Use AskUserQuestion for one-time clarification, covering at least 9 items (no more than 6 questions per batch; can be batched). The first two are style sources — mandatory, cannot be skipped (user can "auto-pick" to speed through, but must confirm):

  1. Style Source (Mandatory First Question): Free design / Pick from reference stations yourself (present candidates from video-real-library.md for user selection) / Reference station auto-picks (user gives topic, AI picks) / User provides references (URL/screenshot, highest priority).
  2. Reference Selection (Three complementary dimensions, when to use what) :
    • Brand DESIGN.md (design system library 资料库/AI工具/设计系统库/{品牌}-DESIGN.md or own project DESIGN.md) → design tokens baseline (color/typography/spacing), used for brand continuation/redesign, no system rebuild.
    • Web HTML (video-real-library / real-design-library reference stations) → layout/visual examples (composition/hierarchy/structure), used when wanting a certain visual structure.
    • Video (video-real-library motion sources / user-provided video) → motion/rhythm/subtitle style, used when wanting a certain movement language.
    • Complementarity: DESIGN.md defines the system → HTML provides examples → video provides motion; the three combine into a complete direction. User-provided references take highest priority. For selected references, use opencli (keeping login state) to capture real fonts/color values/rhythm, faithfully inherited in Phase 4.
  3. What's the video About: One-sentence positioning + target audience + publishing platform (Douyin/Bilibili/academic/internal — determines aspect ratio and rhythm baseline).
  4. Category Anchor: One of the four categories in remotion-shared/categories/ (voiceover-caption/data-viz/product-demo/brand-motion), or custom.
  5. Aspect Ratio & Duration: 9:16 vertical / 16:9 horizontal / 1:1; target duration; whether it's part of a series (series = rhythm must be reusable).
  6. Emotion/Style: Professional restrained / sharp data / warm narrative / creative rhythm / retro… Provide 2-3 comparable directional words.
  7. Content Form (Key for Subtitle Routing) : Existing voiceover script / Existing .srt/.vtt / Has image-text data / Draft from scratch — determines subtitle source routing.
  8. Preferences/Taboos: Things the user dislikes, subtitle style (sentence-by-sentence / word-level highlight / no subtitles), readability bottom line.
  9. Consistency Check: Does Phase 0 pre-check already have brand DNA (DESIGN.md/visual assets/reference videos)? → If yes, subsequent directions must not deviate (restrained evolution); if no, free design allowed.

If a video-taste-profile exists (工作台/视频/*/.taste-profile.json or global profile), read it first. When style source = reference station, Phase 2 must capture reference ground truth (chrome-devtools/vision), Phase 4 faithfully inherits — do not abstract references into keywords then freely interpret.

Phase 2 — Research (Do only with user agreement, can be parallel)

Three-layer research method, priority from low to high:

  • Layer 1 Industry Conventions: How similar videos are typically made (safety baseline).
  • Layer 2 New Trends: Cross-check against remotion-shared/video-anti-slop.md, capture 1-2 real video references (remotion-shared/video-real-library.md sources + user-provided references highest priority), extract learnable points for subtitle style/transitions/rhythm.
  • Layer 3 First Principles: Viewer psychology, subtitle readability, content-driven rhythm — highest priority. When in conflict, explicitly note "why deviating from convention."

"Visual reference descriptions" in proposals should be anchored to real reference library examples (e.g., "similar to xxx's word-level highlight subtitle style"), not vague.

Phase 3 — Complete Proposal (Core Deliverable)

Output per references/video-proposal-format.md:

  • SAFE Directions (2-3) : Category baseline, safe.
  • RISK Directions (2-3) : Deliberate deviations, each must include "why it's worth it + what you lose."
  • memorable-thing: One-sentence anchor — "a visual/rhythmic moment you want the audience to remember" (e.g., "that push-in transition at second 3").
  • For each direction: Aesthetic keywords, subtitle font, color palette, timeline rhythm (characters per second, transition frequency) , composition, transition style, visual reference description.

Self-check: If two directions differ only in color/font, they aren't distinct enough — redo.

Design System Consistency Check: If Phase 0 pre-check found an existing brand design system (DESIGN.md / brand DNA, e.g., from a previous web or video project), SAFE/RISK directions must not deviate from the established brand DNA (color/typography/emotion baselines) — RISK directions can only do restrained deviations within the established DNA (e.g., change accent hue, adjust dark/light structure, change font system), not tear it down or jump to unrelated styles. Freestyle is only allowed when no existing system exists. Before outputting DESIGN.md, check each item against "color/typography/emotion" baselines for consistency or reasonable evolution.

Phase 4 — Design System (DESIGN.md)

After the user selects a direction, write DESIGN.md per references/video-design-system-template.md, seven sections:

  1. Aesthetic Direction: One-paragraph positioning + keywords + taboos.
  2. Subtitle Typography: caption/title/body three tiers + baseline font size per aspect ratio + highlight mode (word/line/none).
  3. Color Palette: Semantic color board (including captionActive/captionInactive) + contrast floor.
  4. Timeline Rhythm: fps/aspect ratio/total duration + subtitle rhythm + transition frequency.
  5. Screen Composition: Safe zone + subtitle zone + title zone.
  6. Transitions & Motion: Transition selection + duration + entrance motion + easing.
  7. Video Design Tokens (tokens.ts contract, see remotion-shared/video-tokens-spec.md) + Motion Choreography Outline (upgraded from scene blueprint, see video-design-system-template.md §8): Material layering list (bg/mid/fg, composable) + per sentence → material entrance/exit motions + typographic motion + voiceover sync (audiovisual integration) .

And generate a tokens.ts contract (a TS constant object with semantic naming) — this is the sole interface for remotion-build. Motion effects are selected from the master library and written into DESIGN.md (remotion-shared/categories/{category}/motion-list.md).

Section 8: Rendering Kernel Annotation (Optional, default Remotion) : DESIGN.md marks the rendering backend — default Remotion kernel; if user explicitly requests / style needs a web-like feel, mark with HyperFrames kernel (HeyGen open-source HTML→MP4, see remotion-build/references/hyperframes-guide.md). Decision: complex shot cards / existing Remotion project → Remotion; pure HTML/GSAP animations, built-in lint desired → HyperFrames. Rendering kernel only affects build's rendering code; materials/BGM/subtitles/acceptance/§8 outline are all reused.

Phase 5 — Preview + Style Proof Approval Gate (Optional, default on)

Don't render the full video. Output:

  • 3-5 keyframe stills (npx remotion still <id> --frame=N, covering sentence start/end/transition frames) — let user confirm composition and subtitle placement;
  • Or a 3-5 second low-resolution sample (--scale=0.25) — let user see real motion rhythm.
  • Style Proof Approval Gate (borrowed from paper-collage-video style-proof) : After direction is set, first render 1-2 key sentences as 3-5s real samples (low resolution) for user confirmation — whether the style/color/motion feel is right, then proceed to remotion-build full video production (avoid finishing the entire video only to find the style direction is wrong).

Preview artifacts go to 工作台/视频/{slug}/preview/. The purpose of the preview is to let the user make decisions based on real visuals, not to demonstrate "I can render."

Red Lines

  • No default tropes: Do not actively give purple-indigo gradients, uniform subtitle rhythm throughout, or centered composition in every scene.
  • No copying: Do not pixel-clone others' videos (can borrow subtitle style/rhythm, not copy the entire piece).
  • No fabrication: Do not fabricate data, brand facts.
  • Contrast floor: Subtitles ≥3:1 (including on footage/image backgrounds).
  • Video font size floor (all screen text is keyword) : Subtitle caption ≥64px/800, data mono ≥44px/700, title ≥88px/900 — thin small-font annotations prohibited. Iron law numbers sole fact source = remotion-build/references/video-quality-metrics.md §Subtitle hard thresholds ("Video Iron Law" row), do not duplicate numbers here; change thresholds by updating metrics first.
  • Clarify before design: Phase 1 must be completed before jumping to proposals.
