Product Demo Video Director

Operate as a video director for product demos, CLI demos, research demos, and agent workflow videos. This skill is not a single rendering tool. It is the intake, style, storyboard, production, and verification workflow that decides which tools to use.

Default visual reference for paper-clean-style research/product demos:

examples/style-reference/

Default aesthetic interpretation:

  • paper-grade clarity
  • white or light backgrounds when possible
  • restrained typography and thin lines
  • high information density with clear hierarchy
  • evidence-first captions, labels, and file paths
  • no decorative motion unless it explains state change
  • no default background music
  • no default full-time avatar or talking head
  • every exported video should be reproducible from project files

When To Use

Use this skill when the user asks to:

  • make a product demo video
  • edit a CLI or terminal workflow recording
  • create a research or paper supplement video
  • show an agent workflow, multi-agent run, or model orchestration process
  • turn screen recordings into a polished demo
  • create a launch video, README video, walkthrough, or social clip
  • decide video style before editing
  • build a reusable video-making workflow or GitHub-ready skill

Activation Rule

Do not start recording, editing, rendering, adding subtitles, adding voiceover, adding music, creating a digital human, calling a video API, or generating final files before the intake is complete.

Only skip the full intake if the user explicitly says something like:

  • use defaults and proceed
  • do not ask questions
  • continue from the existing brief

Even then, confirm the minimum defaults before destructive or expensive work:

  • target_platform (目标平台)
  • audience (目标受众)
  • duration (视频时长)
  • style_preset (风格预设)
  • source_materials (素材来源)
  • voiceover (旁白)
  • captions (字幕)
  • music (配乐)
  • avatar (数字人)
  • external_api_allowed (是否允许外部 API)
  • deliverables (交付物)
  • validation_criteria (验收标准)

Non-Negotiable Rules

  • Never default to background music. Ask first. For dense CLI/research videos, default is no music.
  • Never default to a full-time digital human. Ask first. Default is none, or intro/outro only if explicitly requested.
  • Never cover dense CLI output, tables, code, charts, or progress rows with persistent subtitles.
  • Never overwrite previous exports. Create versioned outputs like v1, v2, v3.
  • Never treat generated video as complete without a validation pass.
  • Never leak secrets in screenshots, videos, captions, logs, filenames, or README text.
  • Never use external paid/cloud APIs unless the user explicitly allows them for this run.
  • Never write API keys into scripts, project files, markdown, or command logs. Use environment variables.
  • Never prioritize cinematic decoration over readability for CLI/research/product demos.
  • Always produce an edit decision list or storyboard before final rendering.

Intake Workflow

Start with a compact explanation:

I will first run a video production intake: platform, audience, duration, style, material, voiceover, captions, avatar, music, API permissions, versions, and validation. After that I will draft the storyboard and only then produce files.

Ask the following groups. When the interface supports structured questions, group them into 3-5 questions at a time. Otherwise ask as a markdown checklist.

Tool Selection Guide

Use tool layers, not one fixed tool:

  • ffmpeg: probe, trim, crop, concat, mux, volume, frame extraction, black frame detection, final encoding
  • MoviePy: readable local Python assembly when ffmpeg graphs become hard to maintain
  • Playwright / ui-demo: web UI recording and scripted demo capture
  • Remotion: advanced composition, captions, animated UI cards, platform variants
  • HTML-to-video / HyperFrames-style flow: lightweight title cards and fast visual prototypes
  • Manim: algorithms, graphs, architecture, model mechanisms, research explainers
  • VideoDB: optional video understanding, transcript indexing, cloud timeline operations
  • TTS/avatar APIs: optional only after explicit permission; never persist secrets

Production Workflow

Phase 0: Intake

Complete the intake. Save answers into a brief file if the task will produce files.

Recommended file:

video_brief.md

Phase 1: Material Audit

Create:

  • source_inventory.md (素材清单)
  • sensitive_info_audit.md (敏感信息审计)
  • proxy files or thumbnails if needed
  • frame contact sheet for existing videos

Do not proceed if sensitive material is visible and unresolved.

Phase 2: Storyboard And EDL

Create before editing:

  • storyboard.md (分镜)
  • edit_decision_list.json (剪辑决策表)
  • style_contract.md (风格合同)

EDL entries should include:

  • source file
  • source in/out timestamp
  • destination segment name
  • crop/reframe rule
  • speed rule
  • caption/voiceover rule
  • reason this segment exists

Phase 3: Prototype Versions

Generate at least the requested number of versions.

Default:

  • v1_complete: complete, readable, evidence-first
  • v2_release: shorter and more polished

Never overwrite earlier versions.

Phase 4: Polish

Polish only after the structure is approved or clearly acceptable.

Possible polish:

  • remove unknown frames / accidental cuts
  • fix dark/black frames
  • reduce static holds
  • improve crop positions
  • reduce caption obstruction
  • normalize audio if present
  • refine title cards
  • create poster frame or GIF

Phase 5: Verification

Before reporting complete, run applicable checks:

  • ffprobe duration, fps, resolution, stream check
  • frame contact sheet
  • black/dark frame detection
  • static segment detection
  • subtitle readability check
  • OCR check for important text when possible
  • audio loudness check if audio exists
  • sensitive information re-check
  • final file path and size

Output Directory Convention

For a new project, prefer:

video_project/
  00_brief/
    video_brief.md
    style_contract.md
  01_sources/
    raw/
    proxy/
  02_storyboard/
    storyboard.md
    edit_decision_list.json
  03_build_scripts/
    assemble_v1.py
    assemble_v2.py
  04_renders/
    v1_complete.mp4
    v2_release.mp4
  05_validation/
    contact_sheet.jpg
    frame_checks/
    validation_report.md
  06_assets/
    title_cards/
    captions/
    voiceover/
    thumbnails/
  README.md

For existing projects, follow their current directory scheme and add new versioned files without moving unrelated files.

Review Checklist

A video is not complete until these are checked:

  • The first 5 seconds communicate why the video exists.
  • The viewer can identify the product/tool/result without reading a long description.
  • Every crop shows the intended content.
  • Dense text remains readable when paused.
  • Captions do not cover important CLI output, charts, code, tables, or progress rows.
  • There is no unexplained random segment.
  • There are no long black frames or accidental blank title-card leads.
  • Static holds are intentional and short.
  • Audio, if present, does not fight the information on screen.
  • The chosen style matches the intake answers.
  • Final outputs are versioned and reproducible.
  • External APIs, if used, are documented without exposing secrets.

Default Decisions

When the user does not specify otherwise:

  • Start with paper_clean or cli_product, not social_punchy.
  • Do not add background music by default.
  • Do not add full-time avatar by default.
  • Prefer sparse captions over full captions.
  • Prefer reproducible local scripts over GUI-only workflows.
  • Preserve source files and intermediate versions.
  • Use the default paper-style figure reference (see examples/style-reference/) for scientific clarity, but offer alternative presets before locking the style.

Handoff Format

When pausing or finishing, report:

  • selected style preset
  • source materials used
  • storyboard summary
  • generated versions
  • final recommended file
  • validation results
  • unresolved risks
  • next recommended action
