Flight search
Find every real way to fly the route, verify each one against a live source, then price it.
Inputs
Ask only for what's missing:
- Origin and destination (city or airport code)
- Dates and flexibility (exact, plus or minus days, or a whole month)
- One-way, round trip, or multi-city
- Travelers, cabin, checked bags
- Limits: max stops, max layover, nonstop only, airlines to avoid
Rules
- Never state a price, seat availability, schedule, or flight number without a live source checked in this session. Link it.
- Treat your own knowledge and any AI route list as leads. Verify each lead before presenting it.
- Label anything you couldn't verify as "unverified". Never fill gaps with guesses.
- If you can't load a site, say so and give the user the exact search to run there.
- Times in am/pm, local time at each airport.
- Prices move fast. Note when each price was checked.
Workflow
Work in order. Stop once a flight prices well and passes step 7. For long-haul trips, always run step 4 before recommending anything.
1. Route scan
- Search each airport's Wikipedia page ("Airlines and destinations" table) and airline route maps.
- List every airline and hub connecting origin to destination: nonstop, one-stop via hubs, seasonal routes, fifth-freedom flights (a third-country airline flying between two foreign airports), and small regional carriers.
- Keep a source link for each lead. Mark the ones you're unsure of.
2. Verify the route
- Confirm each lead on FlightConnections.com and note the hubs.
- Get operating days and flight numbers from FlightConnections or the airline's own timetable or booking flow.
- Drop leads you can't verify and list them separately.
3. Baseline price
- Google Flights for the dates. Note which verified airlines are missing from its results.
- Skiplagged for hidden-city fares. Flag the limits: carry-on only, one-way only, and airlines can penalize the practice.
4. Airline sites direct
- Search every verified airline that was missing or unavailable in step 3 on its own site.
- If one ticket shows unavailable, try multi-city: origin to hub, then hub to destination.
- Still blocked: price two separate one-ways with at least 3 hours at the hub (4 if checking bags internationally).
- For long-haul, check the main hub carriers directly:
- Africa: Ethiopian (ADD), Qatar (DOH), Emirates (DXB), Turkish (IST), KLM (AMS)
- Asia: Qatar (DOH), Emirates (DXB), Singapore (SIN), Cathay Pacific (HKG), EVA Air (TPE), Korean Air (ICN)
- Europe: Lufthansa (FRA), Air France (CDG), British Airways (LHR), Turkish (IST), Icelandair (KEF)
- Latin America: Copa (PTY), Avianca (BOG), LATAM (GRU, SCL)
5. ITA Matrix (troubleshooting only)
Use it when a verified flight won't price, to compare multi-airline combos, or to check fare buckets. Matrix can't book and doesn't carry every airline.
- Go to matrix.itasoftware.com and open Show Advanced Controls.
- Uncheck "Only show flights and prices with available seats" to list every flight that exists. Check it again to see what's bookable.
- Routing codes:
| Code | What it does |
|---|---|
X:ADD | Connect in Addis Ababa |
C:ET+ | One or more flights marketed by Ethiopian |
O:ET | A flight operated by Ethiopian (no codeshares) |
N:ET | Nonstop on Ethiopian |
/ minconnect 120; maxconnect 1440 | Layovers between 2 and 24 hours |
- Swap in the real airport and airline codes from step 2.
- An international layover over 24 hours prices as a stopover. Search those as multi-city instead of raising maxconnect.
- Set cabin with the cabin dropdown. Don't use
-NOFIRSTor-COACH; they aren't ITA codes.
6. Small carriers and combos
- Run Kiwi.com and Skyscanner for regional, bush, and budget carriers and for mixed-airline self-transfer combos Google won't build.
- Use them to find the connection, then book each leg on the operating airline's own site.
7. Verify before booking
- Confirm each flight number operates on the travel dates (FlightAware, Flightradar24, or the airline's timetable).
- Compare total cost including bags and seat fees.
- Prefer one ticket for the whole trip, bought from the airline selling it. Splitting a single-ticket itinerary drops missed-connection protection.
- For separate tickets, flag: no protection if the first flight is late, checked bags must be rechecked, and rechecking may mean clearing immigration at the hub, so check that country's visa or transit rules.
Output
- Top options table (up to 5): route, airlines and flight numbers, days and times (am/pm local), total price with source link and time checked, one ticket or separate.
- Flights found outside Google Flights and where they were found.
- Unverified leads.
- Exact next steps for anything the user has to do themselves (for example, "On ethiopianairlines.com, search multi-city: [Origin] to ADD on [date], ADD to [Destination] on [date]").
